Webcam Test Online

Check whether your webcam is sending video to your browser. Preview your camera, switch cameras when available, and troubleshoot a black screen.

Camera result & next steps

Test your device above, then review what the browser actually confirmed. A connected device is not the same as a certified working device.

Ready for testing

No result yet. Start the test above.

  • If permission was denied, allow camera access in browser settings and retry.
  • If the preview stays black, check your physical privacy shutter and close competing apps.
  • If video appears, visually confirm focus, lighting and movement. A stream alone is not proof of image quality.

Results are generated locally. Copying a summary is optional; no diagnostic history is uploaded to DeviceDIY.

How do I check if my webcam works?

Quick answer

Start the webcam test, allow camera access, and look for a live preview. If you can see a moving image, the browser is receiving video from the selected camera. This checks basic browser access—not the camera in every app or the quality of a future call.

How to run this test

  1. Connect or uncover the camera and close any app that may be using it.
  2. Select a camera if your device offers more than one.
  3. Press Start camera and allow permission in the browser.
  4. Check that the preview moves, looks in focus and has enough light.
  5. Stop the preview to release the camera.

Understanding your result

✓ What a good result looks like

Your live preview shows a current, smoothly updating image from the intended camera.

! If something does not work

A black or missing preview can result from blocked camera access, a closed privacy shutter, selecting the wrong lens or another app holding the device.

Troubleshooting common problems

Camera permission denied

Use the browser’s site-permission control to allow camera access, then reload and retry.

Black image or no preview

Open the physical privacy shutter, check system camera privacy permissions and close competing video-call software.

Wrong camera selected

Choose a different available camera in the test, then recheck the live image.

What this browser test cannot prove: A live preview does not test autofocus under all conditions, long-term reliability, all camera resolutions or compatibility with every video-conferencing app.

Frequently asked questions

Can I test my laptop camera online?

Yes, if your browser supports camera access and you grant permission. The tool can also check compatible external USB webcams.

Why does my browser say camera access is blocked?

Permission may be denied in the browser, restricted by the operating system or prevented by an insecure connection. Use HTTPS or localhost.

Is camera video uploaded to the website?

No. DeviceDIY shows the camera stream locally in your browser; the test does not upload it to a DeviceDIY server.

Can I test my phone camera?

Often yes. Supported mobile browsers may let you use a front or rear camera; available controls vary by device and browser.
