Open the DeviceDIY webcam test over HTTPS, select the camera, and allow access. If video appears, the browser can receive a stream. If it does not, check the site permission, OS privacy controls and other apps using the camera.
Start with the symptom, not a guess
If your webcam is black, missing or blocked, start by checking whether the browser can receive a live camera feed. A working preview narrows the problem; an error message can point to permissions, device selection or an operating-system setting.
Use the free DeviceDIY tool to observe what reaches your browser. Compare the result with another application when necessary, and change one setting at a time so you can tell what solved the problem. A browser test offers useful evidence; it is not a substitute for professional hardware diagnostics.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
Check whether the camera works in the browser
Open our webcam test and press Start. Approve the browser prompt only if you want to use the camera. Observe whether you see a real preview or an error. A black frame alone does not always identify the cause.
Check the site permission
In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Camera, or use the site information control beside the address. Remove a previous block and try again. Managed work or school browsers may restrict access.
Select the correct camera
If you have a built-in camera and a USB webcam, switch devices in the test. Disconnect and reconnect external webcams when they fail to appear. Some browsers show device names only after permission is granted.
Close apps that might be using the camera
Close meeting, recording and virtual-camera apps, then retry. Restarting the browser may release a stalled capture session.
Check system privacy settings
On Windows 11, open Settings → Privacy & security → Camera and check camera access and desktop-app access. On macOS, review Privacy & Security → Camera for your browser. Check physical shutters and keyboard camera switches.
Separate hardware from browser issues
Try the built-in camera application or another browser. If the camera fails everywhere, investigate the driver, cable, hardware privacy switch or physical device rather than repeatedly changing website settings.
What your test results actually mean
Live preview appears
The browser is receiving a video stream. This does not certify image sharpness, autofocus, lens quality or operation in every other app.
Permission denied
The browser or operating system prevented access; this does not prove that the camera is broken.
No camera detected
The browser cannot currently enumerate or open an input. Check connection, device settings, drivers and another app.
Black or frozen preview
Possible shutter, covered lens, stalled stream, competing app or device issue. Test in a second app.
What an online test cannot prove
Web pages are limited to the information exposed by the browser, operating system and your permission choices. DeviceDIY cannot directly inspect internal circuits or guarantee that hardware will perform correctly in another application. Some tests require you to look, listen or touch the device and confirm what happened.
Privacy and safety: Only grant camera or microphone permission when you intend to use that test. Avoid excessive sound volume, never force a faulty connector and follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance before attempting physical repairs.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my webcam showing a black screen?
A blocked lens or privacy shutter, incorrect camera, competing application, driver fault or privacy setting can produce a black preview. Check the physical camera first, then compare another app.
Does a successful webcam test prove my camera is perfect?
No. A successful preview confirms that the browser can receive video. Visual quality, reliability and performance in another program still require observation.
Can a website switch on my camera without permission?
Browsers normally require camera permission and a secure context. The exact browser prompt and permission persistence vary by browser and settings.
