If Chrome shows a black webcam preview or says the camera is blocked, check site permission, browser selection and the operating system’s camera permission. Test the camera with a local preview before blaming the hardware.
How to test and troubleshoot
Confirm Chrome site access
Open the camera test and select Start camera. If Chrome prompts, allow camera access. If you previously blocked the site, review the camera setting for that site.
Check the correct camera
In Chrome Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Camera, select the correct camera when available. DeviceDIY may also list available cameras after access.
Check computer permissions
On Windows 11, check Settings → Privacy & security → Camera and desktop app access. On macOS, check the relevant camera permissions in System Settings.
Remove conflicting apps
Close video meeting applications and browser tabs that may already be using the camera. Check for a physical shutter, privacy key or USB disconnect.
Retest with a preview
Start DeviceDIY Webcam Test, watch for a moving image and judge lighting and focus. If Chrome works but Teams does not, choose the proper camera in Teams.
What common test results mean
Permission denied message
Review site permissions and any organisation-managed Chrome settings; the browser cannot override an administrator restriction.
Camera connected but preview is black
Check shutter, lighting, competing apps and the selected camera. A connected stream does not prove image quality.
External camera missing
Reconnect USB, change ports and verify the camera appears in the operating system before testing again.
Important: A browser test shows the events or signals the browser receives. It does not independently certify hardware condition, software compatibility, data security or the cause of every fault.
Frequently asked questions
Can Chrome use the camera without installing software?
Yes, if the browser, device and operating-system permissions allow it on HTTPS or localhost.
Why does my camera work in Chrome but not Zoom?
Different apps may have separate permissions and camera selections. Check both.
