Microphone Test Online

Speak into your microphone and watch the live input meter. Record a short sample and play it back to check whether your voice is being captured.

Microphone result & next steps

Test your device above, then review what the browser actually confirmed. A connected device is not the same as a certified working device.

Ready for testing

No result yet. Start the test above.

  • Speak normally and look for level changes; a connected stream alone cannot prove audible input.
  • If the meter is flat, check system mute, input selection and site permissions.
  • Record a short clip and play it back to judge clarity; do not rely on level alone.

Results are generated locally. Copying a summary is optional; no diagnostic history is uploaded to DeviceDIY.

How can I test my microphone online?

Quick answer

Open the microphone test, choose your input device if available, and allow microphone access. Speak normally: movement in the input meter means your browser is receiving sound. Record a short sample and play it back to check intelligibility, background noise and distortion.

How to run this test

  1. Open the test and select the microphone you intend to use.
  2. Choose Start microphone and allow access when your browser asks.
  3. Speak at a normal volume and watch the input level rise.
  4. Record and play back a short sample to check how your voice sounds.
  5. Stop the test to release microphone access.

Understanding your result

✓ What a good result looks like

The input meter responds when you speak, and your recording sounds clear during playback.

! If something does not work

A flat meter can mean blocked permissions, the wrong microphone, a mute switch or no usable input. An active meter does not prove the microphone sounds good: listen back.

Troubleshooting common problems

No sound detected

Check site microphone permission, operating-system privacy settings and the selected input. Try disconnecting Bluetooth headsets that may have become the default.

Input is too quiet

Move closer to the microphone, check OS input gain and reduce background noise before retesting.

Audio crackles or cuts out

Try another USB port, move away from wireless interference and compare with a second app or device.

What this browser test cannot prove: A browser test can measure audio arriving at the browser, but cannot certify a microphone or guarantee that Zoom, Teams or another app has selected the same input.

Frequently asked questions

Can I test a microphone without installing software?

Yes. This tool runs in a compatible web browser and requests microphone permission. No app installation or account is required.

Why does my microphone work here but not in Zoom or Teams?

Meeting applications can use a different microphone or have separate permissions. Check the device selected inside that application and its system permissions.

Is my microphone recording uploaded?

No. The provided tool processes the sample in your browser for local playback; it does not send that sample to a DeviceDIY server.

Does the meter prove my voice is clear?

No. It shows an audio signal. A recording played back through working speakers or headphones is the better way to assess clarity.
