Microphone Not Working? Fix No Input, Low Volume and Permissions

Find out why your microphone is not detected, why audio levels stay flat, or why people cannot hear you.

The short answer

Run the DeviceDIY microphone test, allow microphone access, speak at normal volume and watch the input meter. Then make a short recording and listen back. If neither reacts, review permissions, the selected input and physical mute switches.

Start with the symptom, not a guess

Microphone problems tend to fall into three groups: the browser is blocked from using the input, the wrong microphone is selected, or the device is providing little or no sound. A live meter and local recording help distinguish them.

Use the free DeviceDIY tool to observe what reaches your browser. Compare the result with another application when necessary, and change one setting at a time so you can tell what solved the problem. A browser test offers useful evidence; it is not a substitute for professional hardware diagnostics.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

01

Start with a live input test

Open the microphone test on HTTPS. Grant access if prompted. Speak clearly and watch the meter; a changing meter suggests the browser receives a changing audio signal.

02

Choose the intended input device

Select your USB headset, laptop microphone or external interface. Disconnect unused microphones if names are confusing. Device labels may not be visible until access is granted.

03

Record and play back a short sample

Use the recording control to capture a few seconds of speech and play it back. A moving meter without audible speech may indicate very low level, muted playback, bad positioning or another input being recorded.

04

Check mute and physical connections

Check headset mute controls, cables, USB ports and Bluetooth pairing. A headset can appear connected while the active microphone is still the built-in laptop input.

05

Review browser and OS permissions

In Chrome, review Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Microphone. In Windows 11, check Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and enable desktop-app access where needed.

06

Check input gain and app settings

In Windows, open Settings → System → Sound → Input and choose the intended microphone. Adjust its input level. If the browser test works but Zoom or Teams fails, check the microphone selected inside that app.

What your test results actually mean

Input meter responds and playback sounds clear

The browser received audio and you heard the captured sample. That does not guarantee audio quality under every call condition.

Meter is flat

The current microphone stream is silent or inaccessible. Check selection, mute, permissions and input gain.

Input visible but playback silent

Inspect output volume, speakers and the selected playback device before blaming the microphone.

Permission blocked

Change browser or OS permissions and retest; this is not evidence of failed hardware.

What an online test cannot prove

Web pages are limited to the information exposed by the browser, operating system and your permission choices. DeviceDIY cannot directly inspect internal circuits or guarantee that hardware will perform correctly in another application. Some tests require you to look, listen or touch the device and confirm what happened.

Privacy and safety: Only grant camera or microphone permission when you intend to use that test. Avoid excessive sound volume, never force a faulty connector and follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance before attempting physical repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Why can others hear me in one app but not another?

Different applications can select different microphone inputs or hold different permissions. Compare each app’s device selector and permissions.

Why is my microphone volume extremely low?

Input gain, distance from the mic, hardware mute, incorrect selected input and audio interface settings are common causes.

Does an online mic test record or upload my voice?

Our microphone test is designed to record and play back locally in the browser. Check the site privacy page and browser permissions before enabling access.
