Keyboard Test Online

Press the keys on your physical keyboard to check which key presses reach your browser. See key names, codes and a count of detected keys.

Keyboard result & next steps

Test your device above, then review what the browser actually confirmed. A connected device is not the same as a certified working device.

Ready for testing

No result yet. Start the test above.

  • Focus the test area and press each key you want to verify.
  • Repeat a key several times to inspect missed or unintended repeated events.
  • Browser and OS shortcuts may intercept keys; these results are not a hardware latency measurement.

Results are generated locally. Copying a summary is optional; no diagnostic history is uploaded to DeviceDIY.

How can I test every key on my keyboard?

Quick answer

Select the keyboard test area and press each physical key. The page displays the most recent key and counts distinct key codes received by the browser. This helps identify keys that are not sending expected events.

How to run this test

  1. Keep the keyboard test tab active, then press physical keys. Clicking its test panel is optional.
  2. Press one physical key at a time, including modifiers and function keys.
  3. Compare the key displayed with the key you pressed.
  4. Review the detected-key list and clear the results if needed.
  5. If a key is missing, test it again in another app to rule out browser shortcuts.

Understanding your result

✓ What a good result looks like

Each ordinary key you press produces the expected browser key event and appears in the list.

! If something does not work

Some system keys and special shortcuts are intercepted by your operating system or browser, so absence of an event does not always mean a faulty key.

Troubleshooting common problems

Nothing happens when typing

Click the highlighted test area first. Check whether a screen-reader mode, browser extension or another window has focus.

A few keys do not respond

Remove debris carefully, reconnect the keyboard and compare the keys in a basic text editor.

Wrong characters appear

Check the selected keyboard layout and input language in your operating system.

What this browser test cannot prove: This test detects keyboard events exposed by your browser. It cannot measure electrical switch faults directly or capture protected OS-level shortcuts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I test a laptop keyboard online?

Yes. Focus the tester and press keys. The test works with many built-in and external keyboards.

Why do some function keys not register?

Your browser or operating system may intercept media controls, system shortcuts or function keys before the webpage can read them.

Does this measure keyboard latency?

No. It reports key events, not calibrated hardware latency or polling rate.

Does DeviceDIY save what I type?

The tester tracks key identifiers locally for display and does not transmit keyboard input to a DeviceDIY server.
